Dr. Fran Bates Oates, MA, Ed. S, Ed. D. (she/her)

As an active teacher for over forty-seven years, Dr. Fran Bates Oates has served in the roles of teacher, assistant principal, principal, and Director of Staff Development. After 31 years of service in one of the top five school districts in NC, Dr. Oates retired and joined Winston- Salem State University (WSSU), Winston-Salem, NC, as a Clinical Faculty, continued as the Elementary Education Program Coordinator for ten years, and retired as Director of Field and Clinical Experiences.

Throughout her university career, Dr. Oates has made an enduring impact supervising over 200 student teachers and advising hundreds of college students. Dr. Oates has been called a “Master Teacher” by her students because of the way she nurtured them for success. She has been dedicated to preparing teachers to develop social justice dispositions to teach in multicultural classrooms.

​

Holding a BS in Early Childhood Education from WSSU, Dr. Oates completed her MA in Elementary Education, Advanced Certification in Curriculum and Instruction, an Ed.S in Administration, and an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC; also completed the Harvard Divinity School Leadership Institute in Community and Economic Development.

She takes great pride in telling stories of her lived experiences as well as teaching about how to empower ourselves to be greater and to make greater contributions to the world. Dr. Oates uses her storytelling to help students and clients answer the questions Who Am I and Who Am I as a Social Justice Being? The self-discovery empowers clients, thus Seeing Ourselves Anew.

Currently, she is the Founder and President of Seeing Ourselves Anew, BATESoates Life Coaching and Educational Services, Inc. where she has been a life coach for 17 years offering one-on-one life coaching, group coaching, workshop facilitation, and a course offering titled Social Justice and Me written from her award-winning dissertation. Currently certified in six educational areas including administration, teaching, curriculum development, and mentoring, Dr. Oates completed an International Coach Federation (ICF) accredited program, Falling Awake Life Coach Training by Dave Ellis and is a certified Life by Design Life Coach from One to One Women Coaching Women.

Dr. Oates has left a lasting and contagious impact throughout the years on the many clients and partners with whom she has served. Her work is so comprehensive and so powerful, it is used as full courses and as development programs at such institutions and organizations as Winston-Salem State University, Appalachian State University, NC A&T State University, and the NC School of the Arts. Throughout the years, she has impacted communities locally, statewide, and nationally, presenting at International Conferences on Urban Education, Women in Educational Leadership Symposiums, and at the annual American Education Research Association Conferences.

She is most passionate about teaching, coaching, and advocating for justice for all; teaching and forming extraordinary partnerships that are life changing.
